Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God...
And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him.And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us."
(1 John 3:16, 18-19, 22-23)
Plan youth ministry. Shepherd youth. Manage worship team. Teach Sunday School. Train coworkers. MED meetings. PTA meetings. More meetings. Take 4 grad school classes. Homework. Unpack. Clean. Laundry. Cook. Schedule appointments. Pay bills. PLAN WEDDING.....
With an increasingly busy never-ending schedule, I'm a little hesitant to spend time with people. If we were to hang out, you would be blocked out in my planner. When loved ones ask to hang out, I tell them first, "Let me check my schedule..."And on the real, most of the time on my days off, I prefer to catch up with my schedule than spend time with someone.
I wonder how Jesus managed it. With crowds of people following him, and most of these people not even there for Him but just to get a free healing, how did he NOT take appointments! He had a deadline to complete his ministry. 3 years to save humanity, teach them, AND love them?! How can you put a time cap on that. But Jesus was never too busy for lepers, children, IRS knocking on his door...and he STILL fulfilled his mission on earth.
When we talk about Jesus sacrificing his life, it just wasn't on the cross. No disrespect to the cross - we BOAST in the cross. But he sacrificed his own time & energy to love people even though he was WAY BEYOND their level. And I love that he modeled that NON-self-centeredness I lack. Instead of people parading on MY schedule, MY work time, MY homework time, MY day off, God breaks down my "to-do list" to 2 things. 1.) Love God & 2.) Love each other. Even if I check off everything on my list and miss these 2 marks, I am useless.
So as an encouragement to you guys (if you're still there), I know we are at an age where we gotta get life done. We either gotta find schools, jobs, or study hard in our schools or work hard in our jobs. Beyond that we gotta start taking up grown-up responsibilities that our parents have let go of now. We don't have kids, spouses (yet), families on our own to take care of. As of now, our responsibility is just OURSELVES. But please let's not forget to look outside of ourselves to serve, show compassion, be available to listen, and pray for someone at the expense of our own time and energy.
Holy Hip Hop track of the day! 5 points to you if you know where the title of my post is from...
Thanks for the sharing. Great post!
ReplyDeleteAs a response to your last part,
I will pray more for you and your ability prioritize your life and all the business around it.
It actually encourages me a lot to be praying for other people, especially the few in Thomas who have an ongoing/unfinished prayer request.
I also hate paying bills. Actually just the paying part.
Thanks for the reply and your prayers...Aren't we blessed to have an awesome God who takes time to listen to us even when he already knows our needs?
ReplyDelete"Can I pay yo bills? Can you pay my telephone bills? Do you pay my automo' bills? If you did then maybe we could chill..."
