Influence is a rather interesting phenomenon in our "Gen Y" culture. We live in one of the most unique eras of human history, in one of the most diversely integrated cultures, and also in one of the most troubling times for Christianity. Even within our indivudal cultures lies an infinite amount of subcultures, constantly blending amongst each other to create new ones. We can easily get drawn into the hype like an insect being called into a bug-zapper and subsequently, before we even know it, we're completely derailed from our previous path (how did I turn from a hip-hop loving, skinny, wannabe thug to a lineback-sized beached whale who spends most of his week doing church stuff??).
One of the most significant subcultures in my time was an online blog similar to this one called Xanga. Oh, Xanga. I'm reminiscient of the days when I breathed and bled for 'eprops' (the equivalent of a 'like' on facebook), madly clicking away on the refresh button like I was playing Counter-Strike to see if there were any new comments. I lived my days waiting patiently for something of interest to post about when I got home, and as long as anyone cared about what I wrote, life was good.
I've finally been released from Xanga rehab, and as a recovering addict, I was kind of skeptical about being dubbed an 'author' on this blog. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how different this one was to be. Finally I can blog freely without the drive of eprops to dictate my writing. Finally I can write about the things I go through, the things that matter. Eternal things. It's awesome that we have this channel for us now to keep each other accountable. I can't wait to see the potential fruits that can be bore from this site. We'll be able to influence each other in the right ways, encourage those of us who are gripping onto our faith for dear life, and share the praises and blessings God has doused on us daily.
There's been a somewhat new word being tossed around lately. "Meme". Heard of it? Wikipedia defines it as "an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture" or "a unit for carrying cultural ideas which can be transmitted from one mind to another". While religion in itself has been labeled before as a meme, we know better. Our faith is real, not a passed-down ideology. However, this new blog can serve as a meme within our Thomas subculture. Let's let this place bloom!
I almost didn't want to give you an "eprop" comment because they say addicts shouldn't be around their addiction during rehab, but this was too well-written.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you can see the freedom Christ has gained for us to express the ideas that come from His Spirit with no limits.
And now I know what a MEME is!
